This is a geometric coercivity statement for a finite affine maximum.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space, let s⊆Es\subseteq Es⊆E be a nonempty finite set, and assume

0∈int⁡(conv⁡(s)).0\in\operatorname{int}\bigl(\operatorname{conv}(s)\bigr).0∈int(conv(s)).

Then there exists c>0c>0c>0 such that, for every function a:E→Ra:E\to\mathbb Ra:E→R, every M∈RM\in\mathbb RM∈R, and every y∈Ey\in Ey∈E, if a(x)≤Ma(x)\le Ma(x)≤M for all x∈sx\in sx∈s, then

c∥y∥−M≤affineMaximum⁡(s,a,y),c\|y\|-M\le \operatorname{affineMaximum}(s,a,y),c∥y∥−M≤affineMaximum(s,a,y),

where affineMaximum is the maximum of ⟨x,y⟩−a(x)\langle x,y\rangle-a(x)⟨x,y⟩−a(x) over x∈sx\in sx∈s. The constant ccc depends on the finite set and its neighborhood condition, but not on aaa, MMM, or yyy. The vertex intercept bound is required only on the elements of sss.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
