This statement computes the moments of a sum of two independent centered variables.

Let μ\muμ and ν\nuν be probability measures on measurable spaces AAA and BBB. Let X:A→RX:A\to\mathbb RX:A→R and Y:B→RY:B\to\mathbb RY:B→R belong to L2L^2L2 and satisfy

∫AX dμ=0,∫BY dν=0.\int_A X\,d\mu=0,\qquad \int_B Y\,d\nu=0.∫AXdμ=0,∫BYdν=0.

Then (a,b)↦X(a)+Y(b)(a,b)\mapsto X(a)+Y(b)(a,b)↦X(a)+Y(b) belongs to L2(μ⊗ν)L^2(\mu\otimes\nu)L2(μ⊗ν), has mean zero, and satisfies

∫A×B(X(a)+Y(b))2 d(μ⊗ν)=∫AX2 dμ+∫BY2 dν.\int_{A\times B}(X(a)+Y(b))^2\,d(\mu\otimes\nu) =\int_A X^2\,d\mu+\int_B Y^2\,d\nu.∫A×B(X(a)+Y(b))2d(μ⊗ν)=∫AX2dμ+∫BY2dν.

The result is a reusable second-moment identity for independent sums.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
