This is an auxiliary second-order expansion lemma for convex functions.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space, let f:E→Rf:E\to\mathbb Rf:E→R be convex on EEE, let x,p∈Ex,p\in Ex,p∈E, and let B:E→EB:E\to EB:E→E be continuous linear. Assume that for every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0, for all yyy sufficiently near xxx, every subgradient qqq of fff at yyy satisfies

∥q−p−B(y−x)∥≤ε∥y−x∥.\|q-p-B(y-x)\|\le \varepsilon\|y-x\|.∥q−p−B(y−x)∥≤ε∥y−x∥.

Then, for every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0, for all yyy sufficiently near xxx,

∣f(y)−f(x)−⟨p,y−x⟩−12⟨B(y−x),y−x⟩∣≤ε∥y−x∥2.\left|f(y)-f(x)-\langle p,y-x\rangle-\frac12\langle B(y-x),y-x\rangle\right|\le \varepsilon\|y-x\|^2.f(y)−f(x)−⟨p,y−x⟩−21⟨B(y−x),y−x⟩≤ε∥y−x∥2.

The declaration eventually_abs_sub_quadratic_le_of_subgradient_expansion_readable converts a first-order local estimate on all subgradients into a second-order local estimate for the function. The same symbol ε\varepsilonε is used in both quantified conclusions, exactly as in the Lean statement.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
