This lemma gives an exact function identity for affine subtraction when the first function is orthogonal to affine functions.

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N, E=RnE=\mathbb R^nE=Rn (EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin n)), and μ\muμ a probability measure on EEE. Assume:

  1. id⁡∈L2(μ)\operatorname{id}\in L^2(\mu)id∈L2(μ).
  2. f,g:E→Rf,g:E\to\mathbb Rf,g:E→R belong to L2(μ)L^2(\mu)L2(μ).
  3. ∫f dμ=0\int f\,d\mu=0∫fdμ=0 and ∫⟨u,x⟩f(x) dμ=0\int\langle u,x\rangle f(x)\,d\mu=0∫⟨u,x⟩f(x)dμ=0 for every u∈Eu\in Eu∈E.

For any function hhh, write h~=\widetilde h=h= affineOrthPart μ h\mu\ hμ h, defined by subtracting ∫h dμ\int h\,d\mu∫hdμ and ∑j(∫⟨ej,y⟩h(y) dμ(y))⟨ej,⋅⟩\sum_j(\int\langle e_j,y\rangle h(y)\,d\mu(y))\langle e_j,\cdot\rangle∑j(∫⟨ej,y⟩h(y)dμ(y))⟨ej,⋅⟩, where (ej)(e_j)(ej) is the standard orthonormal basis. Then, as functions on EEE,

f−g~= f−g ~.f-\widetilde g=\widetilde{\,f-g\,}.f−g=f−g.

This identity is useful for comparing affine-subtracted approximations. It is pointwise, not merely almost everywhere, and requires neither centering nor identity covariance of μ\muμ.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
