This formalizes part of the regularity approximation used in Lemma 2.2 of Letwin (arXiv:2607.24164v1), with a reviewed relation to the cited result.

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N, let η:EuclideanSpace⁡ R (Fin⁡(n))→R\eta:\operatorname{EuclideanSpace}\,\mathbb R\,(\operatorname{Fin}(n))\to\mathbb Rη:EuclideanSpaceR(Fin(n))→R be locally integrable and satisfy ∥η(x)∥≤C\|\eta(x)\|\le C∥η(x)∥≤C for all xxx, and let aia_iai be functions indexed by i∈Fin⁡(n)i\in\operatorname{Fin}(n)i∈Fin(n). Let KKK be compact, assume the supports of η\etaη and all aia_iai lie in KKK, and assume:

  1. ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0;
  2. each aia_iai is a weak derivative of η\etaη along the coordinate basis vector eie_iei;
  3. each aia_iai belongs to L2(vol⁡)L^2(\operatorname{vol})L2(vol).

Then there exist a compact set S⊆cthickening⁡ε(K)S\subseteq\operatorname{cthickening}_\varepsilon(K)S⊆cthickeningε(K) and smooth compactly supported functions θm\theta_mθm such that the supports of η\etaη, all aia_iai, every θm\theta_mθm, and every coordinate derivative of θm\theta_mθm lie in SSS; ∥θm(x)∥≤3C\|\theta_m(x)\|\le3C∥θm(x)∥≤3C; each derivative is in L2L^2L2; and

∥∂eiθm−ai∥L2(vol⁡)⟶0.\|\partial_{e_i}\theta_m-a_i\|_{L^2(\operatorname{vol})}\longrightarrow0.∥∂eiθm−ai∥L2(vol)⟶0.

Moreover, θm(x)→η(x)\theta_m(x)\to\eta(x)θm(x)→η(x) for almost every xxx with respect to volume.

This is a support- and radius-controlled density statement, valid in every finite dimension including dimension zero.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
