This formalizes a supporting density component associated with Lemma 2.4 of Letwin (arXiv:2607.24164v1), with a reviewed relation to the cited result.

Let η,a,b:EuclideanSpace⁡ R (Fin⁡(n))→R\eta,a,b:\operatorname{EuclideanSpace}\,\mathbb R\,(\operatorname{Fin}(n))\to\mathbb Rη,a,b:EuclideanSpaceR(Fin(n))→R and let v,wv,wv,w be vectors. Assume:

  1. aaa is a weak derivative of η\etaη along vvv, and bbb is a weak derivative of η\etaη along www;
  2. η\etaη, aaa, and bbb have compact support;
  3. a,b∈L2(vol⁡)a,b\in L^2(\operatorname{vol})a,b∈L2(vol).

Then there exist a compact set SSS and smooth compactly supported functions θm\theta_mθm such that the supports of η,a,b,θm\eta,a,b,\theta_mη,a,b,θm, and the directional derivatives Dθm(⋅)v,Dθm(⋅)wD\theta_m(\cdot)v,D\theta_m(\cdot)wDθm(⋅)v,Dθm(⋅)w lie in SSS, while both derivatives belong to L2(vol⁡)L^2(\operatorname{vol})L2(vol) and

∥Dθm(⋅)v−a∥2→0,∥Dθm(⋅)w−b∥2→0.\|D\theta_m(\cdot)v-a\|_2\to0,\qquad \|D\theta_m(\cdot)w-b\|_2\to0.∥Dθm(⋅)v−a∥2→0,∥Dθm(⋅)w−b∥2→0.

The conclusion is a two-direction compact approximation result and does not assert approximation of all coordinate derivatives.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
