This gives a finite real-valued perturbation curve for the Legendre transform.

Let ϕ:E→R‾\phi:E\to\overline{\mathbb R}ϕ:E→R be proper and let y∈Ey\in Ey∈E satisfy Leg⁡(ϕ)(y)≠+∞\operatorname{Leg}(\phi)(y)\neq+\inftyLeg(ϕ)(y)=+∞. Let b:E→Rb:E\to\mathbb Rb:E→R, let M≥0M\geq0M≥0, and assume ∣b(z)∣≤M|b(z)|\leq M∣b(z)∣≤M for every zzz. For every t∈Rt\in\mathbb Rt∈R, define

ψt=Leg⁡(z↦ϕ(z)+tb(z))(y).\psi_t=\operatorname{Leg}(z\mapsto\phi(z)+t b(z))(y).ψt=Leg(z↦ϕ(z)+tb(z))(y).

Then ψt\psi_tψt is neither +∞+\infty+∞ nor −∞-\infty−∞, and

∣toReal⁡(ψt)−toReal⁡(Leg⁡(ϕ)(y))∣≤∣t∣M.\left|\operatorname{toReal}(\psi_t)-\operatorname{toReal}(\operatorname{Leg}(\phi)(y))\right| \leq |t|M.∣toReal(ψt)−toReal(Leg(ϕ)(y))∣≤∣t∣M.

This is the finite-value consequence of the extended-real perturbation estimate and is useful for treating Legendre variations as real curves.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
