This lemma states Bessel's inequality for the concrete affine-orthogonal part.

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N and let μ\muμ be a probability measure on E=RnE=\mathbb R^nE=Rn (EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin n)). Assume:

  1. id⁡∈L2(μ)\operatorname{id}\in L^2(\mu)id∈L2(μ) and ∫x dμ=0\int x\,d\mu=0∫xdμ=0.
  2. ∫⟨u,x⟩⟨v,x⟩ dμ=⟨u,v⟩\int\langle u,x\rangle\langle v,x\rangle\,d\mu=\langle u,v\rangle∫⟨u,x⟩⟨v,x⟩dμ=⟨u,v⟩ for all u,v∈Eu,v\in Eu,v∈E.
  3. g:E→Rg:E\to\mathbb Rg:E→R belongs to L2(μ)L^2(\mu)L2(μ).

Using the standard orthonormal basis (ej)(e_j)(ej), let g~=\widetilde g=g= affineOrthPart μ g\mu\ gμ g, namely

g~(x)=g(x)−∫g dμ−∑j(∫⟨ej,y⟩g(y) dμ(y))⟨ej,x⟩.\widetilde g(x)=g(x)-\int g\,d\mu-\sum_j\left(\int\langle e_j,y\rangle g(y)\,d\mu(y)\right)\langle e_j,x\rangle.g(x)=g(x)−∫gdμ−j∑(∫⟨ej,y⟩g(y)dμ(y))⟨ej,x⟩.

Then

∫g~2 dμ≤∫g2 dμ.\int\widetilde g^2\,d\mu\le\int g^2\,d\mu.∫g2dμ≤∫g2dμ.

This controls the squared L2L^2L2 size of the affine-orthogonal remainder under centered identity-covariance moment assumptions.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
