This statement gives the vanishing cross term between a function's designated affine residual and its affine part.

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N, E=E=E= EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin n), and (ej)(e_j)(ej) its standard orthonormal basis. Assume:

  1. μ\muμ is a probability measure and id⁡∈L2(μ)\operatorname{id}\in L^2(\mu)id∈L2(μ).
  2. ∫x dμ(x)=0\int x\,d\mu(x)=0∫xdμ(x)=0.
  3. ∫⟨u,x⟩⟨v,x⟩ dμ(x)=⟨u,v⟩\int\langle u,x\rangle\langle v,x\rangle\,d\mu(x)=\langle u,v\rangle∫⟨u,x⟩⟨v,x⟩dμ(x)=⟨u,v⟩ for all u,v∈Eu,v\in Eu,v∈E.
  4. g:E→Rg:E\to\mathbb Rg:E→R belongs to L2(μ)L^2(\mu)L2(μ).

Let h=h=h= L2.affineOrthPart μ g, where

h(x)=g(x)−∫g dμ−∑j(∫⟨ej,y⟩g(y) dμ(y))⟨ej,x⟩.h(x)=g(x)-\int g\,d\mu-\sum_j\left(\int\langle e_j,y\rangle g(y)\,d\mu(y)\right)\langle e_j,x\rangle.h(x)=g(x)−∫gdμ−j∑(∫⟨ej,y⟩g(y)dμ(y))⟨ej,x⟩.

Then

∫h(x)(g(x)−h(x)) dμ(x)=0.\int h(x)\bigl(g(x)-h(x)\bigr)\,d\mu(x)=0.∫h(x)(g(x)−h(x))dμ(x)=0.

This is the cross-term identity used in the affine Pythagorean decomposition. The L2L^2L2 hypotheses are MemLp conditions; dimension zero is included.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
